Golf is a funny sport. That’s not something you want to say to a guy who just hooked his ball into the knee high weeds or someone who just hit into the water hazard…three times in a row. But it has some odd terms and the game itself is a little funny in that you stand in the middle of a field, hit a little ball with a stick into a hole and not just any hole but a specific hole. Funny.

Much like cricket golf has some unique terms. For example, for over and under par you have the terms birdie, eagle and bogie. No eagle is a bird or birdie if you will so where does the term bogie fit in? Why not call one over par a hawk, barn swallow or penguin? Another example is that nowadays clubs have numbers like 2 iron and 3 wood but back in olden times when golf was invented the clubs had names. Names like mashy-niblick for a 7 iron and a brassie for a two wood. You see funny.

One of my favorite golf terms not only for the story but its use is the Mulligan. A Mulligan in golf terms is a do over. As I was told, it is an optional rule that can be used only once per round and mostly between friends in non competitive golf rounds. In my golf days, it was really more mandatory and most definitely used more than once per round but I digress.

The story goes that Mulligan, you can Google his first name, was the starter at St. Andrews, the golf Mecca and pretty much where golf got its start. Mulligan would do his job getting the other golfers started and then when his friends would come by the clubhouse to play the back nine he would join them. But since his buddies had the front nine to warm up he would take an extra shot at the tenth hole to “warm up”. Hence the Mulligan was born.

Today’s deal is half off of two rounds of golf at The Links at Riverlakes Ranch. The Links at Riverlakes is a great, challenging course. It has a lot of beauty too. This championship course has many lakes, trees and is interweaved throughout the housing in a picture perfect way. This is a great place to have a tournament. They have professional instruction for all levels of players. There are memberships available too.

Not only is a great looking golf course but it beautiful space for wedding or other special banquet or party. I’ve actually hosted a wedding there and the staff was quite helpful, the food was tasty and the location was beautiful.

Don’t forget to stop by the restaurant for some delicious food. The amazing views from the dining room at Riverlakes Ranch are reason enough to come inside and spend some time. Out the window, you’ll overlook the beautiful, blue pond that surrounds the sculpted 18th green and down the perfectly manicured fairway to the 18th tee box.  Look for their daily specials or come by for Taco Tuesdays or Thursdays.

Today’s deal is half off of two rounds of golf at The Links at Riverlakes Ranch. This is your chance to bring a friend and laugh at the funny game of golf. I don’t suggest laughing at your friend unless you are good at ducking flying golf clubs but I do suggest having fun. Get out in the field, chase a ball, and enjoy the outdoors, the “fresh” air and the challenge of a game that takes minutes to learn and years to master.
