$10 of Lunch Food for $5
The agave plant produces several pounds of edible flowers during its final season. The stalks when roasted taste sweet and can be chewed to extract a sugar cane like substance. Agave nectar is used as an alternative to sugar. The extract can be made into a tea to relieve constipation. In water, the leaves lather like soap. The leaves also can be dried and used as pens, nails or needles. These many uses make it quite a useful little plant.
The real reason however I am imparting my newly found trivial knowledge of the “century plant” on you is that the blue agave plant’s rush of sap to the base of the flower stalk which then is fermented and becomes mezcal. And one of the best known uses of mezcal is tequila. And one of the best known uses of tequila besides the shooter is the margarita.
It is no wonder the owners of Agave Grill and Cantina chose the agave plant as a namesake. The plant is native to Mexico and has been around for many years. It has the nickname of “century plant” because that how long it takes to flower and at Agave Grill and Cantina you will find a new way to experience the Old Mexico.
This hot new addition to the restaurant scene has some great menu choices such as Morro Bay chicken ($13), a grilled breast topped with ham, jack cheese, roasted peppers and grilled onions. Another choice is the hand-rubbed tri-tip, used in tacos, burritos or on its own with rice and beans ($12) and the enchiladas mole ($12, made with grilled chicken).
Our own Pete Tittl says, “The mole in particular was interesting as it was huskier, less bitter and more nuanced with chocolate hints than many versions I've tried locally. I recently got an e-mail from a reader looking for a mole recommendation. I wouldn't hesitate to send them to Agave.”
Back to the whole tequila thing, Agave Grill and Cantina stocks over 100 of them. That’s right 100 tequilas in stock. That’s enough to keep you tequila tasting for a very long time. You can also try the Super Margarita that comes with a bottle of Pacifico in it, yes I said in it. Wow! I wonder how many plants that take a century to grow are in one of those.
